Our solicitors provide FREE legal advice and/or referrals in all areas of law, with the following exceptions:
Non-carer parents in child support/family law matters (see under "Child Support" heading for more information)
Family law property settlements (because these matters are typically complex and require ongoing specialised advice)
Landlords (because this would create a conflict with our Tenants' Advice Service)
Defendants in Apprehended Domestic Violence matters (unless the defence is to a cross-application)
Defendants in victims' compensation matters (because we act for applicants)
Respondents in discrimination matters
Legal advice is given during one of our telephone advice sessions, however face to face appointments with a volunteer solicitor are also available in limited circumstances (see below).
Telephone Advice 02 42761939:
Face to face appointments are offered to clients in the following circumstances:
An interpreter is required (we will endeavour to arrange for an interpreter on your behalf)
The client has a disability and is unable to use the phone
The matter is too complex to address over the telephone
Simple documents need to be read and/or interpreted in order to provide the advice
Appointments are conducted by volunteer solicitors from the private profession. Appointments can be made at the Centre on alternate Thursday afternoons, or at Wollongong Library on Thursday evenings. Appointments must be made through the Centre.
(Please note that requests for advice which cannot be addressed in 15-20 minutes will be deemed as too complex and therefore unsuitable for a face to face appointment, and a referral to a private solicitor will be given. NB - this rule does not apply if the matter meets our guidelines for representation - see below.)
Outreach Service for Women:
We run an advice service at the Illawarra Women's Health Centre in Warilla on the first and third Tuesday of each month between 10 - 12 noon.
